Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) is an independent, publicly funded, research and educational institution dedicated to the study of the broad economic and political issues of our time.
Since its creation in 1974, CIDE has been at the forefront of the development and dissemination of knowledge on central aspects of Mexico’s economic and political reality. Throughout its history, the Centre has also offered top quality teaching programs aimed at forming intellectually creative and technically adept professionals in the fields of economics, public administration, political science and international relations.
Both research and teaching at CIDE are based on the firm commitment to the dual pursuit of theoretical rigor and empirical relevance as the best means to further our understanding of the complex ways in which societies produce wealth, manage tasks of governance, organize political life, and deal with shifting international realities. Research at CIDE is guided by rigorous scientific standards and is primarily geared toward the advancement of knowledge in key areas of the four disciplines in which the Centre specializes: Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, and International Relations. The bulk of the research undertaken at CIDE is published in well established national and international scientific journals and academic volumes.
An important part of the Centre’s research effort is also dedicated to the construction of historical and empirical data bases, both of which are scarce in Mexico. At present, data bases for academic research are being developed in three areas: legislative studies, public opinion, historical economic statistics, labor markets and wealth.
Research generated at CIDE also constitutes the basic input for extension activities whose purpose is to endow both specific groups as well as the wider public with information and analytical resources through which to improve individual and collective decision making.
CIDE’s teaching programs are solidly grounded in an active link to research. Their main purpose is to form highly qualified professionals able to assume positions of leadership in their respective areas of expertise. CIDE’s faculty is highly qualified. It consists of 75 full-time professors, 70% of which have doctoral degrees from top level universities and 55% of which are members of the highly competitive National System of Researchers. In addition to its permanent faculty, research and teaching at CIDE are enriched through a regular program of visiting professors and scholars from prestigious foreign universities.
