Local NGO organisation. Implementing partner of NOVIB. Working with the pastoralists in the Somali National Regional State of Ethiopia.

Operational in the following sectors, which are identified and prioritized together with the pastoralists:

  • Natural Resources Management (Supported by NOVIB). This involves tiving training in resources management and raise the necessary awareness for the environmental protection
  • Education (Supported so far by NOVIB). The pastoralists, in the operational area, have no access to education. For the first time, shades for grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 has been constructed. In the planning are: building a boarding school, upto grade 12. NOVIB is taking the lead in contributing for the boarding school, as well, but additional donors are needed to share the costs with NOVIB
  • water (Rain-water-harvesting), supported by IRC (International Rescue Committee) through USAID/OFDA and Oxfam-Belgium through NOVIB Construction/rehabilitation of earth-dams and Cisterns (locally called Birkado). There are no rivers, deep-wells, shallow wells or any other reliable sources of supply in the area. The people and their livestock depend on rain-water harvesting for their supplies. Intention is to increase the capacity of rain-water storage in the area, by constructing and rehabilitating earth-dams and cisterns (Birkado). Since the necessary knowledge is available locally and since they are the appropriate technology for the area.
  • health and sanitation. There are no health services for both the people and their animals and we have not done either much in this respect, but we are looking for partners to assist us in the sector. With sanitation, we have started our first project in Gashamo District (Degahbour zone) with IRC financed by USAID/OFDA
