The Center was established in 1988 with the aim to monitor main demographic tendencies in the Russian Federation, make forecasts on the expected birth and mortality rates, directions and trends in the migration of the population. The Center also works on formulating adequate policy recommendation for the decision-makers on demograhic and migration policies of the Russian Federation.

Currently the Center conducts the following research projects:

  • study on the mortality rates and life expectancy in Russian regions
  • health status of the Russian population, ecological and hygenic situation in the regions
  • migration tendencies in the Russian Federation, migration flows between the CIS states
  • family planning, birth rates and family policies

The Center publishes annual analytical report ‘Russian Population’ as well as monthly bulletins ‘Population and Society’.

The Center also maintains an electronic resource – Demoscope Weekly. It has a website in Russian, with occasional English translations, where it displays main research works, analytical papers and press articles on the issues of demography and human ecology.
