The Division’s research mission is to develop statistical, demographic and actuarial methodology with a commitment to their application in the social sciences and to undertake substantive research in demography and other related disciplines. There are three main strengths: demography and living standards, sample survey theory and methods; and statistical modelling and actuarial science.

Formerly the Department of Social Statistics founded in 1975, this Division is one of five within the School of Social Sciences, the other four being Economics, Politics, Social Work Studies and Sociology and Social Policy. The School was formed on 1st August 2003 as part of a University restructuring process.
