This site is the official site of the eleventh session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XI). The site provides information on the conference, including agenda, key themes, background documents, and live on-line broadcast of the general debate and themeatic sessions.
The site also provides information and documentation on the sub-themes of the conference including:
- development strategies: how developing countries can formulate appropriate national development strategies while also allowing them the necessary economic policy space to benefit from the trading system and develop to their own best advantage
- building productive capacity: how to develop sectors where developing countries have or could have a competitive advantage, how they can diversify to escape dependence on volatile sectors like commodities and how they can attract investment to build their infrastructure
- assuring development gains from trade: how to make preferential and differential treatment more effective, how trade-related concerns can be linked with debt-relief measures and how trade policy can have a positive impact on poverty reduction and gender equality by increasing export value-added, generating employment and enhancing diversification
- partnership for development: the conference is expected to launch multi-stakeholder partnerships in the areas of helping developing countries make full use of information and communication technologies; addressing the problems of the commodities sector; maximising the benefits of foreign direct investment; and Internet-based capacity building and training
