The Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) is a unit within the University of the West Indies (UWI) engaged in a programme of teaching, research and outreach on women and gender issues in the Caribbean. CGDS generates research data on women and/or gender-related issues in the Caribbean. It has developed a programme of outreach to the Caribbean community which has included national and regional institutions concerned with gender and development.

The Centre’s main areas of research include:

  • gender identities
  • women as catalysts for change
  • gender and economic relations in the Caribbean
  • Structural Adjustment Programmes and gender
  • gender and globalization
  • sexuality and religion
  • domestic violence

Aside from conducting research, the Centre also hosts public lectures, seminars, panel discussions – including television and radio workshops. It is also involved in workshops and campaigns aimed at disseminating information to the local community.
