Research focus includes extension and marketing, in both the USA and developing countries. Programmes include the Food Security III Cooperative Agreement with USAID (see separate entry). The department lists its methods and approaches as:
- partnering with African institutions, individual analysts and decision makers;
- integrating research, outreach, capacity building and institutional strengthening;
- focusing on both individual and collective action;
- undertaking “disaggregated” research that looks below the macro level to examine regional, village, household, and gender-level impacts; and
- conducting policy analysis with attention to implementation in the real-world setting of a given country.
The Department also has offices in Mali, Kenya, Mozambique and Zambia and has country-specific websites on research and policy in each of these countries.
The website includes full texts of their agricultural economics staff papers series, and links to Africa-based publications.
