British Broadcasting Company (BBC) Monitoring scans international media live, to provide economic and political news from over 140 countries and translated from some 70 languages. Reports drawn from radio, television and news agencies are published in the Summary of World Broadcasts. The service includes summaries of news bulletins or, in the case of important speeches and events, the complete texts are published with no editorial comment. Data has been collected since 1939. Available in different formats:
(a) Online: available on Profile (see separate entry) as a separate keyword searchable database (from 1987 to date), on Reuters Business Briefing, Datastar and Lexi/Nexis. Also available as part of Textline (see separate entry).
(b) CDRom: as part of the Newsbank disc produced by Readex
(c) FTP: individual issues of the SWB and World Media are available via FTP . Archive is of the most recent 30 days only. Files are downloadable in ascii format (with a programme to convert into RTF). Subscription required for this service
(d) Print: a daily Summary of World Broadcasts (international relations, internal affairs and political policies) and a Weekly Economic Report (focusing on finance, investment and local economy). Available in 5 separate parts covering different geographical areas.
(e) International Reports: tailored news services providing news on specific countries or topics. Distributed daily/weekly/subscriber-selected frequency by post, fax, telex or email. Subscription required.
(f) Newsfile: service on breaking news stories. Subscription required
(g) Inside Central Asia: weekly print bulletin on the former Soviet republics
(h) World Media: weekly bulletin on developments in the broadcasting industry
(i) Microfiche/microfilm: archive and monthly compilations available
