The Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre, (ESID, investigates the political drivers of inclusive development, particularly how state capacity and elite commitment can emerge and be sustained, as well as how donors, reformers and activists can support these processes. With a central focus on power relations and the role of ideas, ESID is researching the determinants of developmental policies and institutions in such domains as social protection, education, health, oil and natural resources, gender, public sector reform, growth, or state-business relations.

ESID is an international research programme consortium led from the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), University of Manchester, and is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development.
